Caring for your WordPress website

WordPress Education

While most people don’t even think about the website font settings you use, those settings can make a difference. Some people are consciously aware of an ugly font choice; others simply have trouble reading and move on, forever leaving your website.

These simple changes to your website font settings could help to boost reader engagement.

  • 16px minimum font size – I’ve even used 18px depending on the target audience.
  • Use dark text on light background – not reversed.
  • Keep paragraph line width to 45 to 75 characters – especially on long articles, or readers’ eyes will get tired.
  • Line height – make sure there’s plenty of space between lines.
  • If your audience is in the Western world, reading in English, left justify your text.

Caring for Yourself

Digital Wellness

I recently finished watching Mr. Corman on Apple TV+.

There are so many mental health themes that stood out to me. Without giving away too much, the 10-episode story weaves characters’ struggles with anxiety, shame, performance, and American society’s unrealistic image of success and perpetual pursuit of positivity.

One conversation that stood out to me went something like this:

“You treat everything like a terrible catastrophe.”

“Well, it is, isn’t it? Just look around.”

“Okay, I’m looking around.” [they’re sitting together in a quiet kitchen]

The gist of the conversation was, “Yes, things are bad around the world. Yes, life is hard. But in this moment, we’re alive, safe, fed, clothed, and housed.”

True, that might change tomorrow. True, that’s not the story for everyone in the world. But in this moment, I can find some joy, some gratitude, some light.

This is particularly challenging in our culture of digital media overstimulation and disconnection with nature.

I only need to pause to hear the invitation to step away, if only for a few moments.

Mary Oliver’s poem, “Invitation”, opens with these lines (I encourage you to find the entire poem):

Oh do you have time
to linger
for just a little while
out of your busy

and very important day
for the goldfinches
that have gathered
in a field of thistles

from Invitation by Mary Oliver
A flock of black birds flying in the blue sky
